Adopt a tortoise

Staff reports

If Carson Valley residents would like to adopt a Desert Tortoise for their yards, they should send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Tortoise Adoption, P.O. Box 8783, Reno 89507, to obtain an adoption kit.

The kit explains how to fix the yard so it will be “dig-proof” and so the tortoises cannot escape. There are plenty of answers to questions residents may have about the animals.

“There are many Desert Tortoises awaiting adoption after being dislocated from land that is being developed in southern Nevada. they need good homes now!” says Darlene Pend of The Reno Tur-Toise Club.

Desert Tortoises are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The Desert Tortoise is Nevada’s state reptile.
