Academic team first in league

Staff reports

Douglas High School’s Academic Team is undefeated after nine contests, according to the team’s coach, teacher Larry Lippmann. The DHS team swept the most recent competition held at the school.

“We did very well,” Lippmann said after the contest held at DHS on Monday. “We have yet to lose. We’re at nine wins and no losses and in first place in the Nevada Academic League.”

Other schools in the league are Carson High, Churchill County High in Fallon and South Tahoe High School at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

The competitions are operated like the old College Bowl quiz show on television, where teams answer questions in seven categories that, according to Lippmann, cover just about everything. The categories are science, math, history, literature, art, economics and potpourri, which also includes current events.

Lippmann praised his students, who practice weekly for the competition.

“I’m always amazed how much these young ladies and gentlemen know,” he said. “It’s impressive how much knowledge they have accumulated in only 17 years on this earth.”

The teams earn points as they answer each question, and the value of the answers depends on the level of difficulty.

Students on the DHS team are Gian Brehm, John Bopp, Josh Linn, Samantha Goldstein, Jed Kuhn, Trevor Stice, James Jackson, Ben Dykes, Sara Whitaker, Peter Steele, Jeff Peden, Chris Kleyman, Dan Morelli, Joe Bradshaw, Heidi O’Hair, Katie Gillard, Josh Burke, Ryan Ghan, Steve Koepnick and Brian McNulty.
