AARP sets tax preparation assistance
Free tax help is available through the Tax-Aide program sponsored by the IRS and AARP. Tax counselors will be on hand to help low to middle income families, students and the elderly with their 2000 income tax returns.
This service is offered by appointment at the senior center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville. Call 782-8267 to make an appointment. Counselors will be available Feb. 1 through April 15 every Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The program will also be offered Feb. 5-April 16 at the South County Sheriff’s Substation, 1470 Albite, Topaz Ranch Estates. Counselors will be available Mondays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other times will try to be accommodated. Call 266-1028 to make an appointment.
People need to provide copies of last year’s tax return as well as the 2000 tax package, W-2s, forms 1099 or substitute statements showing interest, dividends, Social Security and any tax-exempt interest.
Counselors are not trained to prepare complicate returns involving partnerships, businesses, rental property, alternative minimum taxable income or forms related to these subjects.
