4-H livestock show results noted

by Matt Alley

On April 29, the Douglas/Carson 4-H and FFA Area Livestock Show was held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. This was a qualifying show for the Nevada Junior Livestock Show to be held May 11-14 in Reno.

Part of having a livestock project is record-keeping. These are very detailed records kept on your animal and yourself. There’s a lot of work that goes into these record books. The winners are David Hoskin for beef; Tyrel Dressler, sheep; and Brain Hoskin, swine. Another special award is the Butch Ricci Memorial Award of Excellence. The recipient this year is Kyle Martinez.

Participants showed their animals in the quality or market class. Here the animals are judged on their readiness for market and their conformation. These classes are broken down by the weight of the animals, with a grand and reserve champion picked for each species. Here are the grand and reserve champion results: champion steer, Jessica Greer; reserve champion steer, Kyle Martinez; champion lamb, Tyrell Dressler; reserve champion lamb, Aimee Hoskin; champion swine, Skyler Zulian; and reserve champion swine, Shelley Hulsey.

The participants also showed their animals in showmanship, which is how well the person presents their animal to the judge. In master showmanship, where the first and second place from each age division must show all species in their age group, the winners were, in the senior division, first place, Russell Pedrett, second, Bridget Wood; intermediate division, first, Jessica Greer, second, Trevor Kolbus; junior division, first, Jamie Greer, second, Jack Brown. The results for the showmanship contest were, in senior beef, first, Andrea Derobertis, second, Bridget Wood, and third, Richie Ryan; intermediate beef, first, Jessica Greer, second, Kyle Martinez; senior sheep, first, Aimee Hoskins, second, Amber Cornelius, third, Tyrel Dressler; intermediate sheep, first, Charlie Pedrett, second, David Hoskin, third, Kristin Lynn; junior sheep, first, Shannon Martinez, second, Jamie Greer, third, Christy Works; senior swine, first, Russell Pedrett, second, Shelley Hulsey, third, Jessica Brown; intermediate swine, first, Trevor Kolbus, second, Skyler Zulian, third, Hannah Works; junior swine, first, Jessica Kolbus, second, Jack Brown.

Here are the first through third place winners in each weight class: lightweight beef, first, Richie Ryan, second, Larissa Works; middleweight beef, first, Andrea Derobertis, second, Bridget Wood, third, Richie Ryan; heavyweight beef, first, Jessica Greer, second, Kyle Martinez, third, Jessica Greer.
