Genoa, Nev. — A final budget of $271.26 million goes before Douglas County commissioners 10 a.m. today, with an $81.7 million general fund, according to the final accounting. Commissioners meet at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1616 Eighth St., Minden.

County commissioners will hear presentations on the three town budgets today, which amount to $34.66 million between Genoa, Gardnerville and Minden. The towns are advisory to the county, but they all have their independent funds, tax rates and elected boards.

Local governments, of which Douglas has quite a few, must finish their final balanced budgets by May 30 under Nevada law. You know what’s not finished? The state budget. That will have a bigger impact on the school district than the county, but it won’t be long before we find out.

Library Director Tim DeGhelder will be evaluated by the Public Library Board of Trustees. Trustees will also be discussing their budget performance report and gift summary, which will be helped by a $15,000 gift from the Friends of the Library. Trustees meet 10 a.m. at the Minden Branch, 1625 Library Lane.

It looks like the East Fork of the Carson River near Ruhenstroth crested at 11.74 feet back on May 11 and that the forecast warm temperatures in the 90s aren’t going to affect that much. The West Fork crested at 12.37 feet the same date.

An extreme heat watch has been issued starting Friday in the San Joaquin Valley, Sacramento and West Slope of the Sierra Nevada with high temperatures rising to 99-109 degrees. I expect that will result in an influx of visitors to the mountains this weekend.

Down in Carson Valley, we’re looking at a high temperature of 96 degrees on Saturday before another cool-down arrives. Today’s high temperature is forecast to be 85 degrees under sunny skies, with a light northerly breeze at 5 mph.
