Around two-dozen firefighters from across the region donned full turnouts, helmets and air tanks to compete in a one-oxygen bottle challenge at Douglas High School on Sunday.

East Fork Fire Protection District Capt. Nick Summers completed the most laps at the challenge.

“He did 17 laps and lasted for 1 hour, 9 minutes with a bottle that’s only meant to last 45 minutes,” said organizer East Fork Capt. Jeremy Chandler of the Douglas High basketball Hall of Famer.

The challenge was part of a 5K against ALS organized by the East Fork and Carson City professional firefighters associations to help East Fork Fire Capt. Dennis Cote, who has been diagnosed with ALS, also know as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

“We had over 200 people sign up for the 5K, and the fastest time was 17 minutes 27 seconds,” Chandler said. “It was a great turn out and representation for ALS. It will most likely be an annual event.”

Cote was named 2007 Medic of the Year in 2008 after joining East Fork Fire Protection District as a Gardnerville volunteer in 2004. He then became a career firefighter and EMT in 2007.
