Wilkinson, Willis conclude seasons at NCAA Regionals

Haley Wilkinson wrapped up her freshman season with Grand Canyon University softball last weekend during NCAA regionals.

The Lopes went down the road to Tucson, Arizona to take part in the Arizona regional hosted by the No. 13 seeded Wildcats.

In the opener, Grand Canyon fell to Mississippi, 7-4, dropping into the loser’s bracket.

The Lopes bested Santa Clara, 9-4, in their first game of the loser’s bracket before running into host Arizona and falling, 4-1.

Mississippi advanced out of the regional, knocking off Arizona in Game 7.

Wilkinson, a Douglas High School alumna, pinch ran in the win over Santa Clara.

The freshman finishes the spring with eight games played and two starts along with eight at-bats.

She went 3-for-8 with two RBIs.

Grand Canyon finishes the season with a 47-8 record.


WILLIS, BELMONT CONCLUDE SPRING

The Belmont Bruins were bounced out of the NCAA regionals this weekend, wrapping up their season at the Tuscaloosa Regional, hosted by 15th-seeded Alabama.

Belmont opened the postseason with a 5-0 loss against Virginia Tech, falling into the loser’s bracket.

The Bruins beat Jackson State, 2-1, setting up a rematch against the Hokies.

Virginia Tech ended Belmont’s season with an 11-1 win in six innings.

Douglas High School alumna Mackenzie Willis threw two shutout innings in relief against Jackson State with three strikeouts, getting the win.

Willis ends her sophomore season with a 3.39 ERA in 41.1 innings over 17 appearances, 34 strikeouts against 28 walks and a .208 batting average against.

Belmont was 41-16 overall.
