The May 19, 2025, R-C Morning Report

A malewestern tanager flew past me and lighted in a tree right behind my house on Saturday long enough for a portrait. I'm using iNaturalist to ID birds lately. The Alpine Watershed Group is meeting 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Turtle Rock Park to learn how to use the iNaturalist mobile app. Email awg.isabella@gmail.com to RSVP and for information.

Genoa, Nev. — If you’re interested in attending this afternoon’s cybersecurity seminar, I would send a note to dcrwrsvp@gmail.com sooner rather than later. Sheriff Dan Coverley, State Chief Information Office Timothy Gallugi and Digital Evidence Expert Robert Petrachek are scheduled to speak, 3-5 p.m. at Valley Christian Fellowship. It costs $10 and there will be snacks.

Around two-dozen firefighters in full turnouts made their way around the Douglas High School track in a one-bottle challenge on Sunday. They are raising money for East Fork Fire Capt. Dennis Cote who has been diagnosed with ALS. Visit www.5kagainstals.com/nv to donate or for more information.

If the number of photos I got from readers showing the Hot Air for Hope landing is any indication, the event went well on Sunday. I understand the Kids Fishing Derby had around 50 sign-ups at the Friday event.

The Native Plant Sale seemed well attended as I buzzed by on Genoa Lane on Saturday. The wind affected the High Sierra Fly Casters’ fishing gear swap meet in Heritage Park.

The Wienerschnitzel opened on Friday to a big crowd. It appears like there’s quite a bit of interior work left to do on the Chipotle next to Subway in Minden. A Togo’s sandwich shop banner is up in Gardnerville near where the former Pizza Hut was located.

Suicide Prevention Network is hosting a mental health awareness walk on the Martin Slough Trail 5:30 p.m. today starting at the Seeman Pond Park pavilion. Visit www.spnawareness.org for more information about the walk and Mental Health Awareness month.

The forecast calls for sunny skies with a high temperature of 75 degrees and the wind out of the northwest at 5-10 mph. Conditions will be warming up as we head into the Memorial Day weekend.
