The second annual Adaptive Native and Native Plant Sale takes place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the River Fork Ranch Preserve, 381 Genoa Lane.

UNR Extension Master Gardeners of Douglas County host the sale to benefit the local program. Plants are grown by Nevada’s Own Nursery and Washoe Tree Nursery.

All plants are $15 each and proceeds support the Master Gardener and other Cooperative Extension education programs

The UNR Extension defines a plant as native if it was “naturally occurring in a region prior to European exploration.” Cultivating native plants has many benefits, as they are more drought resistant, provide protection against invasive species, can help combat soil erosion in the high desert climate, and are adapted to the ecosystem of this area.

For more information, contact UNR Extension Horticulture Outreach Coordinator Jessica Gardner at jessicagardner@unr.edu or 775-782-9960.

Big Daddy’s blood drive aims to pay it forward

Big Daddy’s Bike & Brew is hosting a blood drive 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.   May 31.

The Vitalant bus will be accepting donations in the parking lot of the shop at 1546 Main St. in Gardnerville.

Bike & Brew owners Monica and Keith Hart are committed to helping bolster the blood supply, as Monica was the recipient of life-saving blood transfusions (as many as five per day) while undergoing treatment for leukemia.

She is now in her sixth year of remission but is unable to donate blood herself because of the disease. The couple has organized several blood drive events to help pay it forward and save other lives through the gift of donation.

Whole blood and power red donation appointments are available at donors.vitalant.org; enter the zip code “89410” and scroll down to locate the May 31 event at Bike & Brew. As a special incentive, all donors who make a blood donation during May are entered to win a family vacation to Universal’s Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida.

More information about blood donation and eligibility requirements can be found at vitalant.org.
