Minden made a splash Friday over the grand opening of the new splash pad at Westwood Park on Ironwood Drive.
During the ribbon cutting on Friday, families gathered to celebrate various ground-level water jets, gentle arcs of water, water cannons, and a suspended bucket that fills with water and tips over, creating a significant splash.
The project was initiated by Town Manager JD Frisbee, who relocated from Utah and noticed the lack of water parks.
“Where I come from there are a lot of splash pads and I wanted to see something like that here in our community,” said Frisbee.
The splash pad project began at Minden Park.
“The Town of Minden didn’t want any features above ground,” said Frisbee. “That splash pad ended up getting a lot of attention and was a great success.”
The Minden Park splash pad opened May 1, 2019, and was an instant hit.
That’s what led to the effort for a more adventurous second splash pad began. The project was first proposed in spring 2023, and work began in summer 2024.
With the help from Great Western Recreation, Aqua Works, and donations from the Carson Active 20-30 Club, and the Town of Minden it came to fruition in three years.
