Genoa, Nev. — As of 7:30 a.m. today, NVenergy.com is reporting 7,390 Douglas County homes and businesses without power, with 5,283 in the Gardnerville Ranchos and 2,001 in Gardnerville. The only restoration estimate is noon for 20 customers in the 89460 ZIP Code.
Most of the outages have been in effect since early this morning, but as recently as 7:35 a.m. East Fork firefighters were responding to wires down on Baltic in south Gardnerville. A Gardnerville Ranchos woman reported the power outage is affecting her oxygen.
A haybale reportedly hit and broke a windshield near Highway 88 and Dressler Lane, according to a call received around 5:47 a.m. today. It didn’t sound like there were any injuries, but the wind through there was fierce.
Watch for fallen trees and branches on your way in today. Trees fell on Waterloo, closing it for a bit. But it was reopened after East Fork firefighters cut up a big tree. Mono Avenue was closed by a tree that toppled into the power lines.
Interstate 580 is closed to high-profile vehicles in Washoe Valley. Truckers were pulling off Highway 88 recognizing a similar danger. I got south of Centerville on 88 and the wind was absolutely cranking.
And by cranking, I’m referring to the 81 mph gust recorded between Centerville and Mottsville lanes at 6:40 a.m. today. There were a half dozen gusts of 70 mph or faster at that same gauge since 6 a.m.
The wind advisory through 5 p.m. today doesn’t seem to quite capture the full picture of what’s going on in Carson Valley this morning. The wind might die down to a dull roar around the end of the day. It will be almost midnight before it dies down completely, according to the forecast.
I think it’s safe to say today’s going to be windy with a chance of showers after 2 p.m. and a high temperature of 60 degrees. We could see a freeze tonight with the low dipping down to 31 degrees in Minden.
