After almost a half-dozen years, it appears that the Nishikida Laundry building in the Gardnerville S Curve might be heading for its final reward.

On Tuesday, members of the Gardnerville Town Board are being asked to approve an agreement between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Nevada State Preservation Office and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection regarding the building that was damaged in a collision in 2019.

The agreement will fund demolition of the building, which is a Brownfield site due to both asbestos and materials containing lead.

The EPA signed off on the project last month.

In recognition of the building’s history, a plaque will be installed on the Gardnerville Station property.

The building is owned by Joe and Dave Nishikida, whose family operated the laundry from 1940 to 1989, according to Preserve Nevada.

Last November, the building made the list of the Silver State’s most endangered historical places. It started out its life in 1876 as the East Fork School, located near where Riverview enters the Gardnerville Ranchos from Highway 395. It moved to what was then southern Gardnerville in 1916.

Gardnerville Town Board members will also discuss a grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that will provide $1.26 million to rebuild Industrial Way.

Funding reconstruction of the road has been underway for more than two years. The town received word it was eligible for funding a year ago. There is no match required, but it’s possible that the money won’t complete the project.

Town Manager Erik Nilssen said the town has $624,745 in budget reserves should the project come up short.

Gardnerville meets 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the town hall, 1407 Main St.
