Skywatchers may be in for a treat this week with a total lunar eclipse taking place today and Friday. If the weather cooperates, those of us in the Pacific time zone will see a partial eclipse of the moon starting just after 10 p.m. Thursday night. Maximum eclipse takes place just before midnight at 11:58 p.m., with the partial eclipse concluding at 1:47 a.m.
During a lunar eclipse, the sun, Earth, and full moon are aligned, and the moon dims as it passes into Earth’s shadow. A total lunar eclipse happens when the full moon is completely within the umbra, or the darkest part, of Earth’s shadow. When in the umbra, the moon appears reddish-orange in color, which is where the name “Blood Moon” comes from.
NASA’s got a great page that details this month’s total lunar eclipse. Visit https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/moon/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-march-2025-total-lunar-eclipse/ to learn more.
