DOUGLAS BASEBALL BESTS FALLON, FERNLEY
Douglas High School opened up its spring campaign with a 2-0 win over Fallon in Minden on Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers got an RBI knock from Jackson Ovard to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Ovard finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate.
Douglas got an insurance run in the sixth when Aiden Tarlo singled to left to score Colt Cummins, who led off the inning with a base hit.
On the mound, Duncan DeLange allowed just one hit over four innings of work after getting the start.
DeLange fanned eight Greenwave hitters in the win and walked four.
Peter Ziegler struck out three in two innings of relief and Blaine Bilderback closed out the game with a three-out save.
The three Tiger pitchers combined to allow two hits.
Thursday afternoon, Douglas went out to Fernley and bested the Vaqueros, 12-2.
The bottom of the Tiger batting order collected six of the teams' nine hits as Tyler Sentell and Grayson Kamper each drove in a pair of RBIs.
Jared Peters and JT Lopez were both credited with an RBI in the win as were Tarlo, Ovard and Jake Hoover. Peters and Colt Cummins both recorded multi-hit days at the dish.
On the mound, Titus Gocke put together a five-inning start with seven strikeouts and no earned runs allowed. Brent Faiss came on for a two-inning save, punching out four Fernley hitters in the process and not allowing a hit.
UP NEXT: Douglas (2-0) will be at home Saturday against McQueen (1-3-1) with an 11 a.m. scheduled first pitch. The Tigers will travel to Carson on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. first pitch against their rival.
TIGER SOFTBALL PAUSED IN SEASON OPENER
A lack of daylight forced a pause in Douglas High softball’s season opener at Reed Tuesday.
The Tigers led 8-7 in the bottom of the fourth inning at the time of stoppage.
A resumption date is still to be determined, according to DHS Athletic Director Daniel Senger.
In four turns through the batting order, the Tigers had six hits from six different players, including a two-run Peyton Simpson homer in the top of the fourth.
Ava Gildea was 1-for-1 with a pair of RBIs while Marissa McLelland and Annie Hill had each driven in a run as well.
UP NEXT: The Tigers’ next scheduled contest is March 11 at home against McQueen (2-1). First pitch is set for 3:45 p.m.
