While signs are up for TOGO’s and Chipotle, the big restaurant news this week was the soft opening of Flame of India on Monday.

Striking while the kadai is hot, the new Indian restaurant hosted a free buffet advertised through word of mouth.

The restaurant, in the former Sonney’s BBQ at 1488 Main St., in Gardnerville, opened for real on Friday, according to a server.

It’s open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4-9 p.m., with a buffet open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It’s the fifth restaurant in the 34-year-old building that originally housed Two Guys From Italy for 20 years.

Over in Gardnerville’s Waterloo Center, Nevada Ugly owners Tom and Lenee Hunter plan to open TOGO’s this month.

“We are very happy to bring the TOGO’s “True to the Sandwich” concept to our community,” Lenee Hunter said. “I grew up in the Bay Area and know all about the TOGO’s brand. I moved to Gardnerville 26 years ago and my husband is a native Nevadan and is a pharmacist.”

Lenee said her husband saw the company was expanding out of California on Link’d In.

“When he told me about it my excitement was contagious,” she said.

The TOGO’s will be located in the former Pizza Hut in the center.

Marine Corps officer and Topaz resident Sukhbir Toor will open Nevada’s first Juice It Up! franchise in Gardnerville by late summer, with plans to grow the brand throughout Douglas County and the greater Reno-Carson City region, according to the company.

A devout Sikh, Toor was the first Marine allowed to wear a beard and turban, something that was the topic of a New York Times story.

The Waterloo Center opened in 2008 and was the last Carson Valley home for the Department of Motor Vehicles, which left the following year.
