Last year’s District 1 commission candidates James McKalip and Brian Dempsey were the top candidates for a second seat on the Douglas County Planning Commission.

McKalip won out and will join the planning commission for a year.

Former Washoe County Public Works Director Dan St. John was appointed for a two-year term.

McKalip ran in the Republican Primary while Dempsey ran in the general election against Commissioner Danny Tarkanian.

Tarkanian voted for McKalip, as did the rest of the board in a second ballot. Planning Commissioner Dave Nelson resigned his seat to take a position on the Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District Board.

Lake Tahoe resident Melissa Lynn Ward was named to the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Kelly Gardner and Brenda Robertson were reappointed. Robertson was the only applicant for the East Fork seat on the board. Ward and Gardner are Lake Tahoe representatives.

Former county commissioner Doug Johnson was selected to the Carson Water Subconservancy District. Johnson is one of only three people to have served the whole 12 years permitted by state law on the board of commissioners.

Two Lake Tahoe general improvement districts required the appointment of their entire boards on Thursday.

Robert Pifer, Steven Davis, Roy Golightly, Steven Gregory and Michael Collie were appointed to the Sierra Estates General Improvement District for two-year terms.

Teresa Chaves, Shiralee Batten, Marit Monsos, Richard Kline and Ross Ritman were appointed to two-year terms on the Zephyr Knolls General Improvement District. Neither of the improvement districts had a single candidate file for office in 2024.

• Linda Mae Hivert, Jim Lee Jr. and Richard Chapman were appointed to two-year terms on the Airport Advisory Committee.

• Genoa residents Rick Myers, Carol (Denise) Huiner and Molly Dahl were appointed to the Genoa Historic District Commission.

• Valley ranchers Frank Godecke and David Hussman were appointed to the first four-year terms on the Water Conveyance Advisory Committee.

• Theresa Oliveira was appointed to a four-year term on the Library Board of Trustees.
