Genoa, Nev. — East Fork firefighters responded to a structure fire on Topaz Lane in the Gardnerville Ranchos around 5 p.m. Thursday. The fire was in a small firewood shed and a portion of fence line, according to East Fork Fire Protection District. A second structure fire call on Banner at 5:45 p.m. ended up being a kitchen incident.
Chief Operating Officer Kathy Lewis said an 8.75 percent increase in PERS for emergency responders and the expiration of contracts with the Douglas County deputy and sergeant associations are going to be major challenges for the 2025-26 budget. I suspect that’s going to be the case across the Silver State.
Former Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District chairman James McKalip and former Washoe County Public Works Director Dan St. John were named to the Douglas County Planning Commission on Thursday.
Lake Tahoe resident Melissa Lynn Ward was named to the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Kelly Gardner and Brenda Robertson were reappointed to the board.
Former county commissioner Doug Johnson was selected to the Carson Water Subconservancy District. Johnson is one of only three people to have served the whole 12 years permitted by state law on the board of commissioners.
Gardnerville was taking down the Christmas decorations and putting up three-dozen flags on light poles celebrating the Douglas County School District’s Portrait of a Learner program. The flags will be up until it’s time to replace them with flower baskets in late May.

Today’s forecast is for sunny skies and a high temperature of 54 degrees and not much wind. The high temperature is predicted to dip into the low 40s on Monday but should bounce back by Tuesday.
