Through March 16, Nevada Public Radio is accepting submissions to their annual “Focus on Nevada” photo contest. Participants have a chance to win prizes from B+C Camera and might even see their photo featured on the May 2025 cover of KNPR’s award-winning magazine, Desert Companion.
Now in its 13th year, this annual photo contest aims to showcase Nevada and its people across the following categories: Artistic and Abstract; B&W and Monochromatic; Landscapes; Plants and Animals; Town, Country, and City scenes; and Storyteller. Photographic submissions must be original works and can be any photo taken at any time, provided the photo was taken in Nevada.
A detailed description of each category and the official contest rules can be found online at https://knpr.org/focus-on-nevada-photo-contest. To see winning entries from the 2024 contest, visit https://knpr.org/desert-companion/2024-05-31/12th-annual-focus-on-nevada-photo-contest.
Established in 1975 as an independent, not-for-profit, public benefit corporation, KNPR was Nevada’s first National Public Radio affiliate station. KNPR’s mission is “to enhance the quality of life and foster civic engagement by informing, educating and inspiring a growing audience through public media – including content on air, in print and online.”
UNR Extension hosts club for budding beekeepers
According to nonprofit organization The Bee Conservancy (thebeeconservancy.org), bees are responsible for pollinating one in three bites of the food we consume and about 80 percent of flowering plants throughout the world. Humans are dependent upon bees for survival, and their declining numbers, due to things like pesticide use, climate change, and loss of habitat, is cause for concern.
There’s a global push toward supporting bee populations, and there’s a unique opportunity to do so right here in Douglas County.
The University of Nevada, Douglas County Extension hosts monthly DC Bee & Pollinator Club meetings on the third Saturday of the month, February through November. The club is open to anyone interested in beekeeping in and around Douglas County, and meetings feature educational talks from fellow beekeepers and experts, visits to local area apiaries, demonstrations, and other educational opportunities.
Meetings take place 10 a.m.-noon in the conference room of the UNR-DC Extension office, 1325 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. Annual membership to the club is $20 (up to a family of 6).
