A new position to cover public administrator duties was approved by Douglas County commissioners on Thursday.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to have an employee instead of a contractor after Public Administrator Steve Walsh resigned in December.

Under an ordinance approved by commissioners, the office of public administrator will no longer appear on the ballot.

Assistant County Manager Wendy Lang said that one of the challenges is that under the law, an independent contractor cannot be treated like an employee.

While generally opposed to contracting out the position, commissioners agreed to a contract with Compassionate Solutions Inc. to work on the remaining cases. The company works with Nye County.
