McAvoy Layne and Guy Clifton hold the first weekend edition of The Record-Courier, published Nov. 26, 1989. The note says, “Mac, The legends live on. Guy, March 30, 1990.” The photo was likely taken by R-C photographer Chris Tumbusch and was posted to Clifton’s Facebook Page.
You know who loved the Reno Rodeo? Longtime Western Nevada journalist Guy Clifton.
The Guy Clifton Scholarship which recognizes Clifton’s lasting impact, will award $10,000 annually to students studying journalism or related fields.
Clifton served as editor of The Record-Courier from May 1989 to August 1990 before covering the rodeo for the Reno Gazette-Journal for 22 years.
The scholarship is part of more than $150,000 offered by the Reno Rodeo Foundation
The Foundation is accepting applications for its 2025 scholarship program through March 28.
