Sitting in the urgent care waiting room is not usually a fun experience, but thanks to the little red box filled with books from the Douglas County Library, Carson Valley Urgent Care patients can make the best of their wait with a book to read.
“There’s something about when you’re not feeling well and how reading a book can help that mental health part of being sick,” said Douglas County Library Director Tim Deghelder.
The box is a little free library sponsored by the Carson Valley United Methodist Church.
“We wanted to do something for the community and encourage reading,” said Carson Valley Methodist Church Librarian Deborah Blackman.
Deghelder said the Methodist Church became eager to sponsor a book box after he told them about some of his projects he had for the library.
“Now, thanks to them we have one here at Carson Valley Urgent Care for patients to enjoy,” said Deghelder.
Little free libraries are book swap stations usually in front of grocery stores, near parks, and various other locations. They come in many shapes and sizes, but all with the idea, “take a book, share a book.”
Deghelder said patients can start a book and take it home with them, without having to worry about returning or replacing the book they took.
“The Douglas County Library will keep it stocked,” he said.
Deghelder said red boxes can also be found at Alley and Friends, Sunshine and Rainbows, Meneley Elementary School, The Carson Valley Food Closet, and Mr. Bubbles Laundromat.
“We are looking into having a red box at more locations soon,” said Deghelder.
