More than 20 stores throughout Douglas County participated in Small Business Saturday.

Hosted by the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, a proclamation approved by Douglas County commissioners on Nov. 21 highlighted the vital roll small businesses play in the community’s economic health and cultural vibrancy.

“Our local businesses are the first to sponsor events, teams, and organizations, proving that small businesses are truly the backbone of Carson Valley and communities everywhere,” according to the chamber.

Small Business Saturday encourages residents to support local businesses fostering economic growth and strengthening the local economy.

“For every $100 spent downtown, 68 percent of that stays in your local economy, which means that for every $100, you have $68 staying in your community,” said Main Street Gardnerville Director Jen Tune. “It is a return on investment that is really invaluable to our local economy.”

Local businesses might not have a “door buster” sale going on, but each  participated in the Small Business Saturday Passport Program where shoppers enjoyed special offers, won prizes at each stop and completed the shopping passport for a chance at a grand prize, all while supporting local shops.

Visitors to each business received a stamped passport. Some of the businesses required a purchase for a stamp and additional marks were given for every $10 spent, which provided additional entries into the drawing.

Thursday is the deadline to turn in passports with a minimum of 10 marks at any participating business or the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce. Two gift baskets will be awarded. One basket will be won in a random drawing from all passports with 10 or more punches received. The second grand prize basket will be awarded to the passport with the most marks.

Participating businesses included Luminary Books, DST Coffee, Sierra Chef, Chocolate Shoppe, 2A Beef, Coffee on Main, Heartstrings Gallery & Gifts, GadZooks, Fresh Ideas, Fish, Cottonwood Creek, Mad Dog Café & Market, Carson Valley Lions Club See’s Candies and more.
