Major construction on Main Street through Gardnerville is substantially complete, according to a 9 a.m. Thursday text from the Nevada Department of Transportation.
On Thursday morning, there were still a lot of cones guiding motorists through downtown but those could be gone by this afternoon’s Thursday Wine Walk.
Three NDOT vehicles were in traffic at the light at Gilman Avenue.
There are still some crosswalks that haven’t earned their stripes, yet.
“Drivers will continue to see brief lane, sidewalk, and intersection closures for finishing work such as flashing pedestrian crosswalk installation up through the Labor Day weekend,” according to the text which thanked the community, businesses and drivers for their patience.
On Wednesday, Main Street Director Jen Tune said that work would be done well before the first day of school on Monday.
State Transportation Spokesman Meg Ragonese was also playing cards close to the vest Wednesday on the opening.
While the highway has been essentially torn up and repaved over the last two months, work trenching for utilities along the route has been under way for more than a year.
“By reconstructing the highway base to a depth of 15-18 inches in certain areas, the project provides for a sturdier and more durable roadway base, topped by up to 6 inches of new asphalt surface for a smoother drive,” Ragonese said. “The project also made many other important improvements which aren’t as visible. Along with reconstructing the roadway, crews added storm drains at Mission Street to tie into existing storm drain systems and installed additional underground conduit line to improve connectivity with current and future roadway cameras, road-weather information systems, and more.”
The wine walk is 4:30-7:30 p.m. today with the theme “Champaign on the Bit.”
