Douglas High students plant for June Ag Sale

After at least a three-year hiatus, the Douglas High School’s Ag sale returns to the greenhouse June 3, 4 and 10.

“It’s back, it’s new and exciting,” said Agriculture teacher Robin Futch. “The greenhouse is blooming and the students have enjoyed seeing the different stages of it come together.”

Futch said students have grown everything in the sale including a variety of garden vegetables, landscape flowers, house plants and hanging baskets, the same hanging baskets visible on highway 395.

“Some are planted by seed, some are started by plugs, but the students have done all the planting care,” she said. “Throughout the class students learn about propagation and what it takes to maintain nutrients, watering skills and transplanting.”

The FFA program and classroom instills leadership, personal growth and career readiness through agriculture.

“I joined Ag for the experience, because it could teach me stuff that would be important for the future,” said Douglas High School senior Jade Paine. “I’m excited to see the outcome because there hasn’t been one in awhile.”

Futch said the sale teaches students how to advertise, customer service and salesmanship, and supply and demand.

All proceeds from the sale benefits the high school’s FFA program, including maintain and running the farm area and students’ participation in FFA activities and events.

The Ag sale is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 3-4 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 10 at the Douglas High School greenhouse located in room 601.

“It’s the white building next to the soccer field and north parking lot,” said Futch.
