Genoa, Nev. — A proposed hybrid formula to support China Spring Youth Camp that accounts for both student population and historical use to assess the counties that use it goes before Douglas County commissioners today. Cuts to the camp’s budget and the impact of the coronavirus contagion resulted in big hits to its budget last year, closing the boys’ side for a couple of months.

County commissioners will also conduct a hearing on an ordinance that will allow Douglas County’s first synagogue. Approval of Chabad at Lake Tahoe is being challenged by the other tenants, but the ordinance change will render that challenge moot. Commissioners meet 10 a.m. today at the Douglas County Courthouse in Minden.

Smoke from the Red and Rodgers fires continues to drift north into Western Nevada. The bigger of the two fires, Red is up to 3,558 acres as of last night’s Inciweb report, which means it has doubled in size over the past five days. That’s not very fast, but it’s burning a bunch of old dead logs and generating smoke. The Rodgers Fire is at 1,645 acres and is growing much slower.

Yosemite National Park Fire officials say both fires are pinned by terrain so they’re managing them to burn off dead material. That means we may see some smoke from them through the weekend. Air quality in the Valley remains in the good range, according to fire.airnow.gov this morning, but some sensors further south are easing into the moderate range.

The driver of a gray Nissan utility that collided with a semi truck at around 8:34 p.m. Aug. 26 was helicoptered for treatment from a wreck on Highway 395 and near Double Spring Flat. Three others were transported by ground.

Wednesday’s high temperature in Minden hit 98 degrees, and is expected to reach the same temperature today. Haze and smoke is forecast this morning, but the 5-10 mph breeze out of the west should clear it out this afternoon.
