Update: The seniors defeated the juniors 12-0 in the return of Mountain Madness Powder Puff football game on Friday night.
The two-decade tradition, Mountain Madness returned to the Douglas High School football field Friday with all contests after a three-year hiatus.
Hosted by Douglas High School Block D, the Mountain Madness festival, which annually features the girls’ Powder Puff football game, a tug-of-war, milk chugging and a lip sync contest, has been a looked forward to celebration since 1999.
Block D President and senior Campbell Dedmon said although the Powder Puff football game has continued in the last three years, the other contests have been on the sidelines, because of the Coronavirus.
Friday’s event is the first Mountain Madness to feature all festivities since 2019.
“I am so excited that our senior year we get to have the first ‘normal’ Mountain Madness in three years,” said Dedmon. “We are the only class to have seen it our freshman year, so we are that class that gets to bring it back, which is cool.”
This year 32 juniors and 38 seniors are competing in the Powder Puff game, beginning at 6 p.m.
“The seniors won last year as juniors, so we are hoping to get back-to-back victories,” said Dedmon.
Mountain Madness gates open at 4 p.m. The Powderpuff football game begins at 6 p.m. followed by tug-of-war, the milk chug and lip sync battles. $5 admission.
“As a class, we are excited to end our high school chapter of life with a fun event that involves the whole school,” said Dedmon.
