Nevada Appeals Judge Michael Gibbons filed for re-election in Carson City on Tuesday.

Fish Springs resident and Chief Judge Michael Gibbons filed for re-election to the Nevada Court of Appeals.

In 2014, Gibbons was one of the three Nevada judges appointed by then-Governor Brian Sandoval to form the court of appeals. Elected in 2016, Chief Judge Gibbons will be seeking his third term on the court.

“I have been campaigning across the state since January and I hope to continue to earn the trust of my fellow Nevadans.  I believe the courts must follow the rule of law, guarantee equal justice, and treat crime victims with dignity and respect,” Gibbons said.  “Further, the court of appeals must continue to provide the speedy, accurate and fair resolution of every case.  I would be honored to have the support of all Nevadans as their chief judge on the Nevada Court of Appeals.”

A 41-year member of the Nevada Bar Association, Gibbons started out as a judicial law clerk to District Judge Howard McKibben and then served as deputy and chief criminal deputy district attorney in Douglas County, where he co-prosecuted the extortion bombing of Harvey’s Hotel Casino in Lake Tahoe and successfully sought legislation to protect crime victims.

First elected to the bench in 1994, Gibbons had a 20-year tenure on the district court where he co-founded the Douglas County Special Advocates for Elders program and advanced the Court Appointed Special Advocates program statewide for children.  He twice served as president of the Nevada District Judges’ Association and eight years on the Nevada Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices.  He has always received retention ratings from the bar of 80 percent or higher.

Gibbons’ service continues through philanthropic efforts and youth sports.  Gibbons is a certified youth soccer coach, leading a team in international play in Holland through People to People.  He continues to officiate high school, adult and youth soccer leagues, including recently in the Nevada State 5A high school girls’ finals.  He was named Carson Valley Citizen of the Year in 2006 in part for his support of youth athletics.
