Genoa, Nev. — The smoke from the Washburn Fire took a left instead of a right last night and hooked around into northern Washoe County. Air quality sensors are reading in the mid-good range this morning and there’s just a light haze over the Valley.

Gardnerville had a second tree-related mishap in two days on Monday night when a big old pine took out the power lines along Centerville near Wennhold Lane at around 7:50 p.m.

The power was out to 2,291 homes and businesses for an estimated two hours, according to NVEnergy.com. Someone may have tapped the pine with a vehicle, but there wasn’t any report of a collision. Power was restored to most customers around 10 p.m., though an Aspen Mobile Home Park resident reported not seeing power until around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Riverwood is seeking a special use permit to allow independent congregate senior living in the already approved multi-family zoning south of Topsy Lane and east of Highway 395. I believe this might be Jim Slade’s first planning commission meeting.

The recommendations from the Family Life Sex Education and Aids Advisory Committee for third-fifth graders include a focus on abstinence and a long-needed name change. They’re following the state standards implemented in 2020. Parent permission is required to participate. The school board meets 4 p.m. at the Airport Training Center, 1126 Airport Road.

The Washburn Fire is over 3,000 acres, with 22 percent containment and is continuing to burn actively near Yosemite. So far it has also burned through $2.1 million as firefighters work to save the 500 giant Sequoias. Fire officials hope to have it contained by the end of the month.

We might see thunderstorms tonight and some widespread smoke before 2 p.m. Expect the wind to pick up out of the west 10-15 mph this afternoon. It will be windier near the thunderstorms.
