Genoa, Nev. — A fundraiser has been established for former Douglas High School soccer standout Sarah Marcus, who died at age 39 of signet ring cell carcinoma on Jan. 11, leaving behind a husband and two children. As Sarah Shearer, she set the Northern 4A girls soccer record for career assists in 1999 that stood for a decade. Of the five Tier 3 permits before the Vacation Home Rental Advisory Permit only two were approved after a six-hour slog on Wednesday. Community Development Director Tom Dallaire said there are 531 VHR permits, 94 of which are Tier 3 sized. A waitlist of 146 applications. Dallaire said 20 permits were expired.

There was a report of a wildfire around 11 a.m. Wednesday above Pinenut Road near Robison in the Pine Nuts. I didn’t hear it on the radio, and there’s no indication on the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Page of size or duration. Its location was burned over in the Numbers Fire. Still, as dry as it is, best to be careful with fire in the outback.

A good December at Stateline, saw the gaming numbers up 18.95 percent to $18.481 million. The take at Tahoe is still behind 6.44 percent but has been recovering nicely since being shut down by the Caldor Fire in September.

The opening receptions for Eagles and Agriculture are 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. today at the CVIC Hall with the first tour Friday morning. There might be some room if you want to check out the photos and meet falconers. You can find out more at carsonvalleynv.org or call 782-8144 this morning, because I get the feeling the Chamber folks will be busy this afternoon.

The R-C’s phone situation may be on the way to settling out today, I’m hoping. I’m including a phone number in my contact info because I’m a cross-eyed optimist. If you can’t get through, email me.

A snapshot of yesterday would serve for today’s weather as well with sunny skies and a high of 47 degrees. A light breeze will shift from southeast to northwest this afternoon.
