Local nonprofit organization Between Horses and Humans hosts a new volunteer orientation on 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Jan. 22.

Founded in 2008 by Carson Valley equestrian Barbara Slade, the group aims to empower young people by teaching them how to work with and care for horses. The program brings youth who are experiencing difficult life situations together with horses and provides lessons that utilize “…a variety of methodologies…combining ground exercises, equine body work and riding, along with workshops and seminars, to accomplish [the] mission of ‘providing youth a place to learn leadership and life skills through horsemanship.’”

These skills can foster the development of personal confidence, self-esteem, and positivity. Building connections and relationships with the animals and with others involved in the program can help participants “learn how to value, honor, and respect horses and humans in ways they hadn’t imagined.”

All activities are offered at no cost thanks to generous donations of time, money, and other resources from area businesses, organizations, and individuals.

The new volunteer orientation takes place at Maddi’s Friesian Ranch (maddisfriesianranch.com), 310 Allerman in Gardnerville. Attendees will get to meet the horses, tour the barn, and learn more about the mission and volunteer program.
