The 2022 campaign season is heating up in Carson Valley with a town hall on Thursday that featured Dr. Fred Simon for governor, along with U.S. Senate candidate Sharelle Mendenhall and Lt. Gov. candidate Stavros Anthony.

All three candidates are Republicans. Simon was the first of the field of candidates for governor to announce for the office. Anthony is a three-term Las Vegas City councilman. Las Vegan Mendenhall was 2020 Mrs. Nevada United States.

With filing for office March 7-18, candidates are traveling across the state to make a connection with voters.

On Saturday, more than 40 people crowded into Douglas County Republican Headquarters in Gardnerville to hear Michelle Fiore speak for about 90 minutes about her campaign for governor. Fiore plans to return to Gardnerville, according to Central Committee spokeswoman Virginia Nisse.

“It was a huge success, and we will be hosting more as candidates contact us,” she said. “We are happy to entertain any Republican candidates who want to talk to our community.”

Nisse said she expects at least half of the candidates for governor running in the primary to attend the Lincoln-Reagan dinner on Feb. 18.

“We expect a great turnout of the other offices as well like lieutenant governor and secretary of state,” she said.

Fiore and Simon are among nearly a dozen candidates vying for the Republican nomination to challenge Gov. Steve Sisolak in November.

With Douglas County’s large Republican majority, it has been a stop on the campaign trail for several candidates, including North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee and Senate candidate Adam Laxalt.

On Monday, the Douglas County Republican Central Committee, will be spreading the love with a “Voter Registration Valentine’s Day.”

“Red Valentine volunteers will be walking the streets and businesses in our community with clip boards and valentines to encourage you to check your registration, change your registration, or newly register,” Nisse said. “We are committed to our wonderful community and our state.”

Residents can register to vote at RegisterToVoteNV.gov or the Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer’s Office or at either party’s headquarters.

Filing for local office is at the Douglas County Clerk-Treasure’s Office in the historic Douglas County Courthouse, 1616 Eighth St., Minden.

The county is recruiting paid election workers for both the primary and general elections, Clerk-Treasurer Amy Burgans said.

“Tasks range rom office work to onsite election assistance,” she said. “We are in the process of hiring, so if interested, please reach to our office.”

Anyone with election questions may email elections@douglasnv.us or 775-783-6095.

Burgans said that active registered voters will receive a mail-in ballot for the primary and general elections unless they opt out through either the clerk’s office or the Secretary of State.
