The possibility of a winter storm in Stateline on New Year’s Eve may dampen revelers’ desire to greet 2023 at Lake Tahoe.

A winter storm watch that started on Thursday night isn’t due to expire until 4 a.m. New Year's Day.

While the storm is relatively warm with midnight Saturday right at freezing, 4 inches of rain is expected to fall before it turns to snow on Saturday.

The second three-day New Year’s weekend in a row will see significant preparations by law enforcement for a holiday crowd, though the huge number of participants that used to clog Stateline to ring in the new year have been missing.

Last year, the Sheriff’s Office only reported a half-dozen arrests over the entire weekend at Stateline. Eight were made in Carson Valley.

With only 2,000 celebrants, the corridor was relatively peaceful last year, which was also af-fected by weather after the Christmas weekend storm that walloped Stateline and left motor-ists backed up for miles.

Those who imbibe during the celebration are urged to designate a driver or call for a ride.
