Genoa, Nev. — The ongoing power outage at Lake Tahoe and weather conditions have prompted school district officials to close Whittell High and Zephyr Cove Elementary schools today. Valley schools are on a 90-minute delay.

Genoa, Nev. — As of 5:45 a.m., 965 homes and businesses at Lake Tahoe remain without power. Restoration times range from 7-9 a.m.., according to nvenergy.com.

Highways 50 and 88 are closed this morning, according to nvroads.com. Kingsbury is open to vehicles with four-wheel drive and snow tires or those chaining up, as is 50 from Carson to Stateline. Chains or snow tires are being required on Highway 395 south to Bridgeport and on Highway 208 from Holbrook to Smith Valley.

Deputies are warning of slick conditions at the Highway 88 and County Road roundabout in Minden. I wager things aren’t much better on other Valley roads. Take it easy out there.

The 3 inches of snow recorded at Minden set a new record for Dec. 11 and 2.04 inches for the month makes this the 30th wettest December, so far, since records started in 1906. The Foothills received 8 inches as did Alpine View. Genoa got 7 inches and TRE received 5 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavenly reported 3 feet of snow over the week while Zephyr Cove received 30 inches. All that Sierra cement is clinging to trees, power lines, etc. prompting the outages up there.

Today the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 36 degrees with the wind out of the northwest at 5-10 mph. With clear skies, the temperature tonight is expected to drop to 10 degrees tonight.
