Bed, Bath & Beyond in the Carson Valley Plaza won’t see it’s 20th birthday.

The store that opened Sept. 10, 2003, is one of around 150 locations that are being closed across the country.

When it opened 19 years ago, it was the company’s 517th location.

The store opened the same month as Best Buy and Michael’s. Other members of the Class of 2003 were Borders Books, PetCo, Cost Plus World Market, Pier 1 Imports and Payless Shoe Source.

Of those Borders, Pier 1 and Famous Footwear have since closed.

Borders closed in 2011, and after several Octobers as a Halloween store, recently became home to new gym Vim + Vigor Fitness.

“As part of our closing of underperforming stores in support of our current optimization strategy, Bed Bath & Beyond has decided to close the Carson City location in the coming months,” a company spokesperson said. “We previously shared this information with our valued Associates. While the decision to close a store is always a difficult one, Bed Bath & Beyond looks forward to serving area customers at nearby stores, as well as online at bedbathandbeyond.com and our mobile app, where customers can take advantage of digital services such as Same Day Delivery, curbside and in-store pickup, and free ship-to-home for purchases $39 or more.”
