Gardnerville grocery stores Raley’s and Smith’s were doing a rousing business on Thursday morning as last-minute shoppers prepared for Thanksgiving Day feasts.

Raley’s is open until 3 p.m. today. Smith’s closes at 2 p.m.

Both Douglas County Walmarts are closed until 5 a.m. Black Friday.

Kicking off the holiday shopping season in Carson Valley, this Small Business Saturday is a nationally recognized day to encourage support for local businesses.

In Carson Valley, the Chamber and Main Street Gardnerville promote this Shop Local effort.

On Wednesday, the chamber dropped off passports to nearly 30 businesses. Customers can pick up a passport at any participating business, which are listed at www.carsonvalleynv.org/small-business-saturday

As they visit each business, customers will be able to have their passport stamp, something that some shops may require be purchased. Passports with 10 or more marks may be turned in at any participating business or at the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce to be eligible to for a gift basket drawing. The passport with the most marks will receive a basket, as well.

Participating businesses will have Shop Small signs in their windows.

Country Christmas Market this weekend

Circle S Western Market presents a Country Christmas Shopping Market at the Douglas County Fairgrounds pavilion 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, as well as a food drive.

Entry is free at the market, which features local artisans, bar, food, gift-wrapping, and a Santa’s workshop for kids.

Santa will be there 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days for photos.

Entry is free. The Fairgrounds are located at 920 Pinenut Road in Gardnerville.


Main Street hosts holiday campaign

Main Street Gardnerville is hosting a holiday campaign to promote local businesses by encouraging residents to shop local.

Shop Main Street Kick-off is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 4 and offers an opportunity for shops to promote holiday sales.
