Just over 3,000 Carson Valley homes and businesses were without power on Saturday morning due to high winds accompanying a winter storm.

NVEnergy.com reported the first outages struck around 2-4 a.m. for causes from a transformer failure to trees in the power lines.

The company’s web site said the majority of customers could be back online between 7-8 a.m.

Minden-Tahoe Airport reported a 59 mph wind gust at 2:55 a.m. with sustained winds of around 30-40 mph for nearly 2 hours.

A rare wind alert for vehicles taller than 9 feet has been issued for Highway 395 through Carson Valley and Highway 88 from Minden south to Alpine County.

Chain controls are in effect over Kingsbury Grade and along Highway 50 from Carson to Stateline.

Firefighters responded this morning to a fire at an Industrial Way business.
