If it's Sunday morning in Gardnerville, there's probably a balloon hovering overhead. Jack Jacobs sent in this photo of a hot air balloon drifting over the Berry Farm.

Genoa, Nev. — Douglas County is expected to get a $9.5 million stimulus check from the federal government. Unlike the CARES Act, which had to be spent by the end of the year, the county has until 2026 to spend the money on costs incurred by Dec. 31, 2024. There’s a long list of dos and don’ts that come with the money.

County commissioners are scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. today at the Douglas County Courthouse. Besides the VHR and stimulus discussion, they are also scheduled to discuss accepting the Jacks Valley waterline that will link the county’s East and West Valley water systems and provide fire flow to that corner of the Valley.

The Support Our Seniors group and Carson Valley Inn are hosting a party for the Class of 2021 at TJ’s Corral tonight. Entrance is free to seniors with student ID. Entrance is $1 million for anyone else. Just kidding. If you’re not a senior or a chaperone there’s no amount of money that should get you through the door.

Today is the last day of the 2020-21 semester for Carson Valley students. The Lake Tahoe Schools will run for another couple of weeks before they are released for the summer.

According to the National Weather Service, Minden hit 95 degrees on Wednesday. There were around at least a dozen lightning strikes in the Sierra in Alpine County, which when the wind picks up on Friday could be fanned into flames. Watch for smoke.

The odds are 1 in 5 that anywhere in the county will see thunderstorms after 2 p.m. today. That may soften the forecast high temperature of 96 degrees. We might see a 97-year-old record fall today.
