Douglas High girls’ soccer drops one on Senior Night
The Tiger girls’ soccer team knew Tuesday night was going to bring a tough test as Douglas and McQueen dueled it out to become the No. 2 team in the north.
Behind three second-half goals, the Lancers were able to snap Douglas’ four-game winning streak and leave Minden with a 3-0 win.
The Tigers had a plethora of chances in the opening 40 minutes with the wind at their backs, but couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the back of the net.
“We didn’t play bad,” said Douglas High head coach Andrew Robles. “Give them tomorrow off and then Thursday we get going.”
Campbell Dedmon had the first true scoring chance for Douglas in the 16th minute, but a leaping save from the Lancer keeper kept the contest scoreless.
Dedmon had a fast break chance in the 35th minute, but sailed her shot over the top of the net.
“It’s who puts the ball away. I don’t have a problem with the way we are playing, it’s just finishing,” said Robles.
Trailing 1-0 in the 65th minute, Bailey Rozier was inches away from tying the contest at one with a volley off the crossbar from 18 yards out.
However, the rebound went on to be cleared by the Lancers, who deposited their next two goals in the following four minutes.
Madelyn VonAhsen, Kennedy Cole, Kamryn Harper and Hannah Shaw were all celebrated prior to kickoff for their contributions to the program over their high school career.
“They’re a big part of this team. Whether they see it or not, they’ve been here for four years,” said Robles. “They’re going to be difficult to replace in their positions, … but I’m proud of them.”
UP NEXT: Douglas ends the regular season with a 4-2-2 record and will wait to figure out its opponent for Tuesday night’s regional quarterfinal.
Douglas boys’ soccer posts consecutive ties
With a Saturday afternoon tie to McQueen, followed by a 0-0 draw with South Tahoe, the Douglas High boys’ soccer team has been finding ways to stay in contests with top foes.
Against McQueen Saturday, senior Ricky Diaz had both goals for the Tigers.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Douglas earned a penalty kick after the Lancers’ fouled a Tiger player in the box.
Manuel Solis lined up to take the penalty, but ran over the ball inching it forward for a trailing Diaz, who smashed it straight into the back of the net.
“That was actually pretty awesome,” said Douglas head coach Ricardo Diaz. “He had it in the back of his head. … It was Senior Night, what better time to do it?”
Diaz had a chance at winning the contest in stoppage time with a free kick, but the ball glanced off the post.
Tuesday against Truckee, no one was able to find the back of the net.
The 0-0 tie leaves Douglas with a 1-2-4 record so far this season with one game remaining against South Tahoe Saturday.
Douglas High cross country runs against McQueen
It was a solid dual meet for the Tigers last Friday in taking on McQueen.
The Douglas boys were able to best the Lancers on the scorecard behind top finishes from Jackson Davis (second, 13:36), Soma Baligad (fourth, 14:30) and Dominic Jackson (fifth, 14:37).
Behind the top three, the Tigers had seven of the next eight finishers in the boys’ race.
On the girl’s side, Elena Zarnecki had the best finish of the day in 18:31 to take third.
Fellow sophomore Megan Strand was 13 seconds off her pace, taking fourth in 18:44.
Kayla Dunseith was the final Douglas runner inside of the top 10, taking sixth in 19:16.
