Local roundup: Carson High baseball goes 3-2 to start season

The Carson High baseball team split its two games on Saturday at Ron NcNutt Field, routing University Prep 11-1 while losing to Nevada Union 9-4.

Carson also beat West Valley 15-11 on Friday. CHS is now 3-2 on the season.

CHS scored five runs to take a 5-0 lead after one inning and added four runs in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead and win the game due to the 10-run rule.

Max Fontaine pitched a complete game for the win for the Senators, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three and walking one over five innings.

Carson collected 12 hits. Delsin Roberts, Justin Nussbaumer, and Casey Martensen all had two hits. Kahle Good led the defensive effort for CHS as the Senators didn’t commit an error.

Nevada Union 9, CHS 4

Carson trailed 6-4 when Nevada Union scored three runs in the seventh inning to break the game open.

CHS trailed 4-0 when it scored three runs in the third to pull within 4-3. Delsin Roberts walked and scored and Good, Martensen and Roberts all had an RBI in the inning. Garritt Benavidez started on the mound for CHS, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none over five innings. Kenny Aydelott and Vernon Painter each had two hits to lead CHS.

CHS 15, West Valley 11

Carson scored 10 runs in the second to take an 11-1 lead before West Valley rallied for eight runs in the third to pull to within 11-9. But Carson was able to hold off West Valley behind Martensen, who had three hits and four RBI. Martensen had a three-run triple during Carson’s 10-run second inning.

Good’s RBI double in the fifth gave Carson a 15-11 lead.

During the 10-run second, Kobe Morgan walked and scored a run, Roberts had an RBI single, Josh Ingram was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Justin Nussbaumer and Kenny Aydelott were each walked to force in a run and Good and Martensen each had RBI singles.

Quinn Overland pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief to pick up the win for the Senators. Roberts went 4-for-4 while Good added two hits for CHS.

SOFTBALL

CHS drops two

It was a tough day for the Carson High softball team in Sacramento on Saturday as the Senators dropped two games, losing to Laguna Creek 9-6 and falling to River City 8-4.

Laguna Creek scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-2 lead. CHS rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within 9-6 but it wasn’t enough.

Jailene Salciedo’s RBI sacrifice fly gave Carson a 1-0 lead in the first. Carson tied the game 2-2 in the third on Kedra Luschar’s RBI single.

Amaya Mendeguia and Kassidy Cooley each had RBIs during Carson’s fifth inning rally.

Carson had 10 hits as Cooley, Luschar, and Lauren Hawkins all had two hits.

River City 8, CHS 4

There was trouble vs. River City early for CHS which fell behind 8-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Carson lost despite outhitting River City 9-6.

Salciedo provided 2 2/3 strong innings in relief on the mound for the Senators. Salciedo, Kedre Luschar, and Amaya Mendeguia all had two hits.

Dayton 17, Truckee 0

Dayton scored seven runs in the first inning and 10 runs in the second inning to roll to the win over Truckee. Aleea McGill-Howe went 3-for-3 with a triple and six RBI, Marissa Hein went 2-for-2 with a double, Tamia Powell tripled and scored three runs and Amanda Woitas added a hit for the Dust Devils. Winning pitcher Caleigh Onstott allowed just one hit and struck out four.
