Senior Ben Dooley added another championship to his impressive wrestling resume in Fallon’s final weekend of the regular season.
Dooley captured the 285-pound division title and junior Tommy McCormick finished second at 160 in the Sam Boyd California Invitational Tournament in Morro Bay, Calif., on Saturday.
Seniors Sean McCormick and Drew Kramer did not wrestle (ill).
Dooley won his first four bouts by fall before recording a 2-1 victory over Turlock’s Michael Jeffus. Dooley’s title adds to his All-American honor when he finished second at the RTOC last month followed by a second-place finish at the SNC.
Tommy McCormick won his first three bouts by fall before recording an 8-1 win to advance to the championship. Lemoore’s Will Kloster edged McCormick, 9-5, for the win.
A pair of underclassmen led the way for the rest of the Greenwave in Fernley.
Sophomore Wyatt Hatch and freshman Lucas Prinz each medaled in the Walter Marrietta Vaquero Classic over the weekend. Hatch took fourth in the 126-pound division and Prinz finished fifth at 106.
Fallon travels to Spring Creek this week for the league duals (seeding) before the regional tournament in Fernley on Feb. 1-2. State is Feb. 8-9 in Winnemucca.
Hatch dropped into consolation after his second bout but stormed back with five-straight wins, including three by fall. Hatch lost to Lowry’s Ivan Contreras in the second championship round but pinned Wooster’s Christian Harshberger, Fernley Black’s Mason Sloan and Contreas in a rematch. Hatch, who decisioned West Wendover’s Andres Cervantes, 6-0, in the consolation’s fourth round, lost 10-7 to Sparks’ Walter Gudiel in the third-place match.
Prinz won his first two bouts to reach the quarterfinal round before being pinned by Wooster’s Isabelle Silva in the third period. The freshman grappler, though, won two straight – both by fall – to reach the consolation semifinals. After a close 7-5 loss to Elko’s Grant Castor, Prinz pinned Silva in a rematch to take fifth.
Case Cornmesser (120) opened with a fall to league opponent Angel Huerta of Lowry in the second period but he won two straight over Douglas’ Adeline Chapton and Reno Blue’s Darius Smith, both falls. Yerington’s Throne Milligan, though, ended Cornmesser’s run with a pin in the second period.
Josiah Rosario (126) pinned Owyhee’s Monte Cummins in the consolation but lost to Elko’s Noah Chacon, 13-2, to finish 1-2 in the tournament. Luke Sorensen (138) finished 1-2 after pinning Douglas’ Jeffery Hayward in the consolation. Cody Shelton (145) also finished 1-2 with a pin over Fernley Orange’s Nathan Glass.
Isabella Leal (106) lost both of her bouts: falls to Pershing County’s Devin Moura and Yerington’s Tell Baptist.
