SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Carson City is on the air

Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels is a weekly feature in the Appeal’s Opinion pages in which the Appeal gives Silver Dollars to those who deserve recognition and occasionally a Wooden Nickel to those who deserve criticism.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s local nonprofit radio station KNVC 95.1 FM, which just celebrated its one-year anniversary.

SILVER DOLLAR: Thursday is National Change a Pet’s Life Day so we recognize Pets of the Homeless, the only national organization focused on feeding and providing veterinary care to pets of homeless people.

SILVER DOLLAR: Monday is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, so we recognize the man’s legacy as an advocate for peace and social justice and obviously call for and hope his ideals continue.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada Veterans Coalition for their continued effort to honor veterans whose remains have gone unclaimed as part of the Missing in Nevada project. Recently, 19 veterans were honored in a ceremony at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

SILVER DOLLAR: On this day, today, which is National Popcorn Day, we salute Charles Cretors, who invented the popcorn popper.
