Nevada Tourism Commission reviews $666,600 in grant requests Monday

The Nevada Tourism Commission will vote Monday on a long list of grant applications to support tourism groups, events and activities throughout the state.

That list includes two dozen recommended grants in the Carson City, Douglas County, Lake Tahoe area.

In all, the fiscal 2018 marketing grants program received 122 requests for funding and is recommending support for 104 of them totaling $666,600. That is about two-thirds of the total amount requested for this cycle. That is in addition to the $983,400 awarded in the first cycle of this fiscal year.

The grant funding is dedicated exclusively to develop, promote and improve tourism in Nevada.

That includes $5,000 recommended to help the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority promote the AMGEN Professional Cycling Race that, this year, will start and finish at Stateline in the Tahoe Basin. AMGEN is a top ranking sanctioned race, an event that attracts international cycling stars and promotes the area as a world-class cycling destination.

In addition, the visitors authority is being recommended for $15,000 to market south Tahoe as a site for major meetings and $10,000 to advertise special events at south shore.

The authority is also in line for an $8,750 grant to print and distribute up to 100,000 copies of “the Most Beautiful Drive in America” brochure touting the beauty of the Tahoe Basin.

The Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority is being considered for a series of three grants totaling $11,000 including money to market the month-long event showcasing the novel “True Grit” at locations throughout the capital. In addition, $5,000 is recommended to update, reprint the Carson City Visitors Guide and distribute 20,000 copies in partnership with the Sierra Nevada Media Group.

The Northern Nevada Railway Association is recommended for two grants totaling $12,000 to develop an e-commerce tracking program to help direct potential ticket buyers from the V&T website to Activity Tickets and to fund an off season marketing program for the V&T Railway.

In Virginia City, Piper’s Opera House is asking $12,000 to develop a website for that historic venue and the Brewery Arts Center in Carson is hoping to get $7,000 to help market its outdoor concert series.

Finally, commission staff is recommending $15,000 to help complete the Nevada Single-track Mountain Bike Adventure. That trail system will connect trails across the state from Ash to Kings Canyon to the Toiyabe Crest trail to Cave Lake Park near Ely. The overall campaign also will include stories about those trails as well as services specific to the needs of mountain biker ranging from where to find craft beer to hot springs to soak in at the end of the day. This is funding for phase 2 of the project.
