Community sports roundup: Blue Jays top NV, Bandits to get to .500

The Carson Blue Jays battled back from being swept on Saturday afternoon to posting wins on Sunday and Monday to conclude the Reno Memorial Weekend Tournament.

On Sunday, the Blue Jays posted a 14-4 mercy rule win over the North Valleys Paw Sox, and followed that up with a 7-4 win over the Spanish Springs Bandits.

Against North Valleys, Carson led 7-0 after two innings and coasted the rest of the way. Kyle Glanzmann struck out six and scattered seven hits in pitching a much-needed complete game.

A passed ball and a run-scoring single by Jared Barnard gave Carson a 2-0 lead in the first.

In the second, a triple by Tim Jones, a double by Kahle Good, and singles by Abel Carter and Colby Zemp led to five runs.

Good and Carter each finished with three hits and Teigen Key added two.

On Monday, Carson bolted to a 4-0 lead en route to the easy win.

Carson scored one in first and added three in the third. Zemp had a two-run double in the third and Landon Truesdale had a run-scoring single. Truesdale added another run-scoring hit in the fifth and Barnard had a sacrifice fly.

Truesdale finished with three hits and Zemp added two doubles.

Browns win flag football crown

The Browns, behind four TD passes by Anthony Larry and three by Trevor Marlin, knocked off the Raiders, 40-12, to cap a 15-0 season and win the Talents Carson City Flag Football League.

Kory Grist had two touchdowns and Alex Myrehn had five flag pulls. Joey Altemerano threw a TD pass and Michael Gillie scored a TD, and Erick Vasquez had five flag pulls.

In other action:

The Seahawks, 6-9, knocked off the Patriots, 37-31, as Alan Mayoral scored three times and threw three TD passes. Aden McNabb also threw for three scores and Thomas Young scored twice. The Patriots, 6-8-1, got four TDs from Conner Baker, a TD by Anthony Loyola and a TD pass from Jacob Hanson. Sean Finn had four flag pulls.

The Steelers, 2-13, upset the Eagles, 7-8, 41-26. Kincaid Gill scored once and threw for three scores, and Christian Smith scored four times. Carter Marsh scored once and threw a TD pass while Braden Marsh had a TD and four flag pulls.

Nevada hoop camp at Reno site

RENO — The University of Nevada men’s basketball team will be hosting two sessions of basketball camps this summer at the Boys and Girls Club.

The first session will take place June 26-29 and the second camp will run from July 31-Aug. 3.

The price for camp registration ranges from $106-$200 and will be available to boys entering 3rd-7th grades. Camps will run from Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will give participants individual and group instruction on technique, drills and fundamentals. Qualified coaches from all levels will be present, in addition to the Nevada coaching staff. Game competition and contests with equal playing time will also take place.

Campers will witness daily camp speakers as well as an appearance from Nevada Wolf Pack head coach Eric Musselman. All participants will receive a Nike camp T-shirt as well.

Senators, MEFIYI host basketball camp

The Me For Incredible Youth Inc. (MEFIYI) along with the Carson High basketball program is offering a three-day co-ed skills and development camp at Carson High School.

The dates for the camp are June 7 through 9. The camp registration fee is $85 and additional siblings are $70 each. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. The camp directors are Nathan Tolbert and former NFL star Jojo Townsell.

The head clinicians are CHS coaches Melissa Larsen and Jordan Glover.

CHS football slates golf tournament

The first Carson High Boosters and Alumni Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 17 at Empire Ranch Golf Course.

The cost is $85 per player. Hole sponsorships are available for $100. A hole-in-one wins an automobile.

Pop Warner sets cheer, player signups

The first sign-up for Carson City Pop Warner is June 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Round Table Pizza, 3325 Retail Drive across from Walmart.

The cost is $225 for a player and $325 per cheerleader. The cost is $25 less for additional siblings.

The other signups are June 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pizza Factory, which is also Meet the Coaches Night; July 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at Yogurt Beach; and July 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walmart.

The AYSO organization has two upcoming signups – June 26 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and June 29 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. – at Talents Athletic Center.

The league is open to boys and girls from 3 to 18 (league age is Jan. 1, 1999 to Aug. 14, 2014).

Starting next Tuesday and Wednesday, Empire Ranch will be hosting junior golf clinics from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Gundlach group wins at Toiyabe CC

Max Gundlach Sr., Max Gundlach and Jeff Gussow shot a net 123 to win the Toiyable Men’s Club event on May 24.

Nathanial Brown and Gary Chong (with two blind draws) were second at 125, and Rob Jennings-Teats, Jim Bertholf, Larry Goodnight and Brian Dolton were third at 126.

Fourth went to Todd Harmon, Jim Muth, Stephen Archer and Leland Sullivan with a 129.

Streeter, Ponte win at Eagle Valley

Robin Ponte and Kathy Streeter were winners at Eagle Valley Women’s Club events recently.

In the Thursday Eaglets Twilight League, Ponte won low gross with a 44 and Deb Ford had a 50. Sandy Small and Gina Serrano were low nets winners with 11 and 14, respectively. The format was odd holes only on the front nine of the East course.

On May 24, Streeter shot a 56 to win low gross. The format was 3-2-1 on the West course. Joyce Guy was low net with a 43, while Lee Wilson and Suze Zimmerli tied for second with 44s. Sandy Lawrence won low gross in the second flight with a 61, while Dona McKimmey and Jackie Allard tied for first place low net with 38s. Marge Konieczny shot 70 to win low gross in the third flight with a 70, and Marie Werner won low net with a 46.

Rey wins event at Carson Valley

Jesus Rey shot a net 65 to win Flight A at the Carson Valley Men’s Club recent tourney on May 28. Marc Prause was second with a 66 and Dan Essary was third at 67.

Fred Cons won Flight B with a 71, two shots clear of Mike Davis and Neil Notley. Matt Budjako won his flight with a 67, three shots ahead of Chris Willing and five ahead of Neil Bain.

Bentley group wins Empire seniors

Greg Bentley, Donnie Curd, Al Giannotti and Mike Vanderbeck shot 111 to win the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event held at Carson Valley Golf Course. The format was four-man teams with two best balls.

Bob White, Ralph Bothe, Bill Langs and Al Vernon shot 117 but won the tiebreaker over John Pearson, Paul Weller, Joe Morrison and Ed Shepard.
