Carson City’s summer programs are about to kick off and for the first time in years there’s a handy guide to find out about them.
Carson City Activity Guide, a 43-page listing of everything from Aquacize to youth volleyball, is available at the city web site and on its Facebook page.
New this year are a handful of events for older kids.
“We’re focusing on teens this summer. Every community complains there’s not enough for teens to do,” said Dan Earp, recreation superintendent, Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space.
A high school dodge ball league at the Multi-Athletic Center (MAC) runs June 19 to July 12 on Monday and Wednesday evenings. It includes six games and a tournament and costs $15 per player.
A handful of day trips and events are planned, too.
A trip to EZAIR trampoline park and laser tag area in Reno is scheduled June 16. The trip costs $22.
A rafting trip on the Truckee River, conducted by Tributary Whitewater Tours, is on June 21. The trip costs $70.
On June 20, a trip to the Reno Aces game is planned. The game, with food voucher, costs $25.
And there are two clinics: a $20 rock climbing clinic at Base Camp Climbing Gym attached to the Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno on July 13, and archery clinics on July 19 and Aug. 15 with the Clear Creek Bowmen, each for $10.
All events include transportation and are for ages 12 to 17 years old.
Summer Kamp continues this year, but participants are now limited to kindergarten through sixth grade.
Kamp runs from June 12 to Aug. 11 and costs $85 per child per week.
There are about 30 paid staff who operate the camp with a ratio of at least one staff per 12 children, and another supervisor position added this year, said Earp.
For adults, Parks and Rec is adding 3v3 — three players per team — basketball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings June 2 through Aug. 15 at the MAC. The cost is $240 per team.
“We don’t run a lot of organized sports indoors and we have the space so we wanted to try it,” said Earp.
Also new inside the MAC is drop-in pickleball, 6:30 a.m. to noon on Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays.
The department is also hosting two movies this summer: “Moana” on July 7 at the Aquatic Center for $5 and “Sing” on Aug. 11 at a free showing in Mills Park.
The Movers & Doers program for individuals of all abilities has added a new summer event: a trip to Wild Waters water park on Aug. 12. The $12 trip is for anyone 8 years and older.
The summer guide also includes a listing of activities at the Carson City Library.
This is the first guide produced in at least eight years, said Earp, and the department is already working on its upcoming fall guide. The department plans to publish a third one annually in winter. Printed versions may be available soon or starting in the fall, said Earp.
