Nevada Wolf Pack volleyball senior Madison Foley, a Dayton High graduate, has earned a spot on this year’s Mountain West Global Challenge All-Star volleyball team.
Foley, an outside hitter, gets the opportunity to travel to Europe this summer as part of the 12-person team. Assistant coach Megan Burton will also go with the team as one of its coaches. The team will first head to Maribor, Slovenia for several days of training and matches against various national teams from the region. Then, the all-star team will compete in the 2017 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia.
Foley will be competing against some of the best junior national and club teams in Europe. Graduate Madison Morell traveled with the team last year, along with graduate assistant Vish Djurdjevic.
“This is quite the honor for our team,” said head coach Lee Nelson in a statement released by the university. “Two years in a row now we’ve been able to represent the Pack on an international level. And it’s such a neat experience for our student-athletes and coaches.”
Foley averaged 2.31 digs and 2.79 kills per set. She was one of the best servers in the entire conference with 0.34 aces per set.

Blair Roman, Carson High’s first-year athletic director, said that there will be renovations done to the softball field over the summer.
Besides a new scoreboard, the fences are going to be moved back at least 10 feet, and a warning track is going to be put in.
The biggest change will be the building of a new press box. According to Roman, the current bleachers will stay put and a press box, with storage capabilities, will be built behind the bleachers.
The changes are a long time coming.
Roman said once the renovations are complete, he’s interested in putting a bid in to host 4A softball. Carson was a yearly host for regional softball when I first started working at the Appeal.
I’d love to see softball move away from Bishop Manogue, especially if Manogue is going to continue to host baseball. Manogue has a nice softball complex, but Carson has/will have a little more to offer, including better parking for fans, umpires and teams. Again, this is just my opinion, and it’s no secret I think, top to bottom CHS has great facilities.
One of the biggest gripes about Manogue is there’s no area for teams to warm up prior to games.
Carson has open area behind its JV softball field, the football field could also be put to use for loosening up and fielding ground balls and fly balls, and even the JV baseball field could probably be used. There’s also the soccer practice field.
I just think the wealth needs to be spread equally when it comes to hosting tournaments.
It’s too bad the whole postseason couldn’t be played at the University of Nevada. In the best of all worlds, I’d like to see the tournament played partially at night so parents don’t have to take a complete day off work. The only softball venues in Northern Nevada that meet that criteria are Shadow Mountain and Golden Eagle Regional Park in Sparks.

Asa Carter completed his freshman year at Southwest Baptist University by taking second in the triple jump (14.10 meters) at the recent MIAA Championships.
The finish earned Carter all-MIAA honors, which I’m sure will be the first of several.
Carter played mainly on special teams during the football season, and was a consistent point scorer for the track team this spring.

Another Carson alum, Colby Blueberg, is enjoying success on the baseball diamond this spring.
Blueberg, who’s in his second season at Single-A Lake Elsinore, is 3-2 with three saves and a 2.05 ERA. In 22 innings, he has allowed 14 hits and has an impressive WHIP of 0.77.

Carson left-hander Bryce Moyle said he expects to make a decision between Washington State and South Mountain College in Arizona by early next week at the latest. South Mountain is one of the top programs in the country.
Moyle had a tremendous season both on the mound and at the plate.
