Prep roundup: Dayton wins, gets first-round bye in tourney

DAYTON —Trevor Burrows threw a complete-game three-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters to lead Dayton to a 3-0 win over Truckee on Saturday morning, earning the Dust Devils the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming postseason tournament,

Dayton, which finished a game behind Spring Creek, plays the South Tahoe-Fernley winner on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Todd Field at South Tahoe Middle School.

“We made it clear to the kids that it was more important for us to get momentum heading into the regionals than it was to secure a bye,” coach Mike Burrows said. “We are proud of how they responded knowing we had to sweep to finish second. They also know just because we don’t play in the first round doesn’t guarantee anything. Both Fallon and Elko came out of the loser’s bracket to go to state last year.”

Dayton scored single runs in the first three innings and Burrows made those tallies stand up.

Dylan Baker gave Dayton a 1-0 lead in the first with a two-out homer. The Dust Devils made it 2-0 in the second when Zach Woitas reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on C.J. Wilhite’s sacrifice fly. Baker walked with one out in the third and scored on Nick Hein’s single.

Baker led the Dust Devils with two hits, while Justin Schmidt and Hein added one each.
