150 Years Ago

Prisoners returned: State convicts were taken from the county jail and returned to the state prison. They have been secured there since the fire. They were marched out of the jail into an omnibus drawn by four horses and guarded by well-armed men who walked alongside on foot. Lt. Gov. Slingerland preceded them on horseback. The prisoners resembled the captured crew of a Confederate pirate ship.

130 Years Ago

Volcano: A regular old world volcano appeared in the Arizona mountains, near Bronson, Ariz. The highest cliffs have sunk, lakes have dried up and water has burst out on deserts. The whole country is wild with excitement.

110 Years Ago

Darktown minstrels: The beauty and the brains and the cleverness and the talent of the town has been crammed into the Darktown Minstrel show. These amateur minstrels never knew how smart they were until Miss Page got her hands on them. The receipts go to the Leisure Hour Club and you keep money at home.

100 Years Ago

Royalty planting potatoes: Princess Mary has taken up a plot of ground in the gardens of Windsor Castle, where the royal family is now living, which she is personally digging and preparing for potatoes — the British royal family wants to set a good example to their subjects in wartime economy. Restrictions adopted are five potato-less days and one meatless day each week.

50 Years Ago

James R. Hoffa: Chattanooga, TN — James Hoffa, 54, arrived in court in handcuffs for a hearing that may free him from an eight-year prison term for jury tampering.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
