U.S. Taekwondo team to lead seminar in Carson City

Representatives from The U.S. National Taekwondo team, which placed third in the world championships in Peru last fall, will hold a seminar April 16 at the Chi Kwan Taekwondeo School in Carson City. The school is run by world games silver medalist Chi Duong of Carson City.

The school is located inside the Carson Mall at 1223 S. Carson St.

Included will be national team coach and head instructor Huy Nguyen. The focus at the seminar will be on freestyle and recognized Poomsae Taekwondo.

Duong, who won a silver medal in the 65-over age group, will be joined as assistant instructors by Long Nguyen, a bronze medalist, and Anh Nguyen, a silver medalist and other national team members.

The event will serve as a fundraiser for the U.S. National Taekwondo team with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the team.

Two sessions will be held.

Session 1 will take place from 10 a.m.-noon and will be for green, blue, red and black belts ages 8 and older. It will focus on correct poomsae fundamentals (hand techniques, kicking and transitions), accuracy, and a subset of the Taeguek forms.

Session 2 will be from 1-4 p.m. and involves black belts ages 6 and older. It will focus on advanced training techniques to maximize presentation for competition, covers some of the Dan-level forms, and goes over Freestyle Poomsae training components.

For black belts, both sessions are recommended. The afternoon session will build on the morning session. However, the morning session isn’t required for the afternoon session.

Cost will be $40 for one session or $75 for both sessions.

Team USA posted a record 20 medals at the 2014 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, earned an unprecedented 28 medals (19 gold) at the 2015 Pan Am Championships/Open, and 20 medals (4 gold) at the 2016 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.

Coach Nguyen will explain the training methods used to train athletes of all levels, from novice competitors through world-medalist caliber athletes.

To sign up for the seminar, call the school at 775-885-0547 or contact USA National Team Head Coach Dan Chuang at dchuang@cwtkd.com.
