Community sports: All-star play begins Wednesday

The annual District 1 Little League all-star tournament gets underway today at Governors Field.

In the 11-12 division, Carson Valley meets South Tahoe at 5 p.m. on Field 2 followed by Reno American and Reno Continental at 7:30. On Field 4, Truckee plays Reno National at 5 p.m. followed by Carson City and Centennial at 7:30.

In the 9-10 age group, Truckee plays Sparks National at 5 p.m. on Field 3 followed by Washoe and Carson Valley. On Field 5, Reno National plays Providence at 5 followed by Reno American and South Tahoe at 7:30. Carson drew a first-round bye and won’t play until Sunday.

The 10-11 division gets started on Thursday with Reno Continental facing Carson Valley, Reno National taking on Reno American and South Tahoe battling Washoe. All three games start at 7:30 on Fields 2, 3 and 4. Carson’s first game is on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The junior tournament doesn’t start until July 5. Truckee-North Tahoe faces Carson at 6 p.m. on Field 1. The winner plays Reno American at 6 on July 6.

Carson’s seniors got a bye into the state tournament because no other teams in the area elected to field senior teams.

Fly fishing class

set for July 14

The Carson Fly Fishing Club will conduct an Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy July 14, 7 p.m. and July 15, all day starting at 9 a.m. at the Ormsby Room, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, at 911 E. Musser St.

The course will cover equipment, casting, entomology, flies, and knots and leaders. The casting portion will be late afternoon at Baily Pond on July 15. The purpose of the class is to learn the basic techniques of fly fishing. This will be the 17th year that the Carson Fly Fishing Club has presented this class free to the public.

Pyramid Lake triathlon

set for July 8

The 2017 Pyramid Lake Sprint Triathlon is set for July 8 at Sutcliffe Marina at Pyramid Lake.

The sprint triathlon is an 0.5-mile swim, 14-mile bike and a 3-mile run

The duathlon is a 2-mile run, 14-mile bike and 3-mile run

The Wave 3 triathlon is a .25 mile swim, 5-mile bike and a 2-mile run (costume required)

Schreiber wins

Carson Valley event

Jeff Schreiber shot a net 68 to win Flight A at Carson Valley’s Tip, Tough and Tuck tournament on June 25.

Jim Howard was second with a 71 and Marc Prause was third with a 72.

Chris Willing shot a net 63 to win Flight B by two shots over Neil Notley. Bill Allen was third with a 70. Matt Budjako won Flight C with a 64, three clear of Jim Tavernier and four ahead of Jack Zippwald.

Maxwell wins flight

at Empire Ranch

Roger Maxwell carded a net 58 to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event.

Geoff Swan won the tie-breaker over R.C. Crapo. Both shot 64s.

Al Giannotti won Flight B with a 62, one shot clear of Mike Helm and Skip Yokota. Adam Huber won via tiebreaker over Steve Isaacson for the Flight C title. Both shot 64s. Bill Bowers was a stroke back at 65.

Hoppe triumphs

at Eagle Valley

Karen Hoppe carded a 20 on the front nine at Eagle Valley-East in the Eaglets Twilight League on June 15.

Robin Ponte was three shots behind and Deb Ford was third with a 31.

On June 21, Kathy Streeter had a gross score of 53 to win Flight 1. Donna McKimmey won low net in the first flight with a 44 followed by Joyce Guy with a 44.5 and Karen Bowman with a 45.5. Bonnie MacQuarrie won low gross in Flight 2 with a 67. Gail Nelson won low net with a 46.
