Respect country by honoring veterans
On behalf of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 4 of Carson City, I would like to thank the Nevada Appeal for the front-page coverage it gave us on May 30 for the Memorial Day service at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
Sadly, there are fewer and fewer in attendance for these events as some forget why we commemorate on this day. It is because of the sacrifice of so many that we have the freedoms which we cherish. It is not a perfect country, but I wouldn’t trade it for any other.
My parents came from Poland and my father never let me forget why they came here — for a better life for their children and future generations. I am proud to be an American first and of Polish descent second. The American flag flies in my front yard for my father who fought in the trenches of France in World War I and my husband who served during the Korean conflict, plus all my relatives who served since my father’s time.
We are not a perfect nation, but it is up to all of us to respect our flag and, if need be, change our government by voting in decent politicians.
That is why our auxiliary raises money through a Girls State Tea to send young ladies to an Americanism camp for a week in Tahoe every year.
Our next one is on June 16 at the Governor’s Mansion. I am proud to be a part of this great organization who cares for our veterans.
